Why Spread Life?

Why Spread Life?

We believe that the spread of life between planetary bodies is a natural process in the universe. It may be how life on Earth started.

Our Earth has a natural intelligence, and our plant, animal, and fungi relatives have a wisdom that we barely understand. We believe that part of humanity’s role on Earth is to help continue the cycle of life by sending it outwards. It may be what we evolved to do.

Diversity is the key to resilience. We are currently experiencing a mass extinction. We lose 150-200 species every single day. We believe a genetic biobank backup of life today is worth saving for the future.

We believe in being pioneers and explorers. To push the boundaries. To move outwards, and aim for the stars. We believe in making space accessible to people like you.

We believe in the power of our connection to the Moon. By sending a physical piece of ourselves with intention, we can grow our connection.

We have a dream to make life multi planetary. We Believe that Our Earth is alive and that she decided to spread life into space.

The next chapter in the evolution of the planet is going to space. We value high biodiversity and believe that all life is beautiful and worth preserving. The extinction rate of species is alarming. We want to record and safe the genetic blueprints of all living species.

One of the biggest challenges that humanity is facing is the feeling of being disconnected from the rest of life. Our mission is to connect people spiritually, emotionally, and physically with the Planet, Life on Earth and the Moon.

Help us to make the Moon a global symbol for love, light, and the deep connection to Our Earth.

Why Your DNA?

DNA is the molecular blueprint that makes you you. It is YOUR unique code - a molecule that contains your body’s unique instructions to live, learn, grow, adapt, and reproduce.

You are made up of over 27 trillion cells. Each coordinates and functions with precise instructions provided by your DNA.

DNA connects all life here on Earth. This code connects us through the tree of life to all of our ancestors, to all humans, and to all of Earth’s biodiversity. Our DNA connects us back to a single origin.

Scientists have found DNA from Woolly Mammoths, Saber Tooth Tigers, and Neanderthals. We learn about ancient life through DNA.

It makes sense to save a copy of Earth’s biodiverse DNA today for the future. A genetic bank could be used by future scientists to study or even recreate life today.

How does it work?

__

Add your DNA

Get your MOON KIT - a simple at-home saliva collection kit. A single drop of your saliva contains millions of copies of your DNA. Spit and mail back. It’s easy.

__

Save for the future

Your DNA gets preserved with DNA from our plant, animal, and fungi relatives. This biobank gets saved in a Lunar Library along with a knowledge archive.

A first Lunar Library is already on the Moon. It was sent by our partners at Arch Mission in early 2019. It contains DNA from 25 people, all of Wikipedia, and thousands of books.
You are invited on the next mission.

__

Launch to the Moon

We share a rocket and lunar lander with several other missions to make the Moon accessible and super affordable to you. Our next launch is scheduled for early 2021.

Dreams do come true: you can finally go on that epic space mission - just in micro form. You’ll get to watch your rocket launch and your Moon landing. You’ll get an insider’s view of the mission. You'll see lots of proof.

We did it already. Are you joining our second mission?

We already sent 25 samples of human DNA to the moon.

Next Moonlander is scheduled 2021 and we are going, no matter what.

We will send and archive your physical DNA, not just it’s informational code.

We do not sequence your DNA nor do we analyze it.
We just safely store your DNA across time and space for the future.

We do not sell your DNA to third parties or give any access to it without your clear consent.

About Us

LifeShip is a San Francisco based mission-driven space and genomics company. Our mission is to spread life in the Universe, record life as a genetic backup copy for the future, and connect people to a hope-filled message about life and the cosmos.

LifeShip was founded by Ben Haldeman who is our CEO. Ben’s work has been about looking for other signs of life in space and using space to help life on Earth. Most recently, Ben was at Planet for 5 years, where he designed and launched over 300 satellites. Previously, Ben spent 8 years building a global telescope network to find new habitable planets. Ben designed instruments to look for life on Mars while in grad school for ME / product design at UC Berkeley. His background is in hardware design, biochemistry, rocket science, strategy, program management, mission design, agile development, and product management.

The LifeShip team is a remote-first group of about 5 people that are deeply mission aligned. We are product designers, brand and content specialist, sales funnel experts, and entrepreneurs connected to doing good for our Earth. LifeShip has several incredible advisors that bring depth and breadth to building innovative companies related to space.

Frequently Asked Questions

How and when will my DNA get to the Moon?
Space is becoming more and more accessible. There are several commercial Moon lander companies promising regular access to the Moon starting soon. We are on one of these missions and are planned to land on the Moon in early 2021. We continue to monitor the progress of our landing partners and are in discussion with multiple.
How can I stay updated on the mission?
We bring you along with us in the whole process from collecting your DNA to delivery to the Moon. By joining the LifeShip mission and adding your DNA, you will get exciting updates and be able to follow along with the technology, process, and greater LifeShip movement. To name a few, you’ll get to live stream the rocket launch, follow your rocket’s progress, and watch the Moon landing.
Who is Arch Mission?
We’ve partnered with Arch Mission Foundation, a non-profit preserving the knowledge and biology of our planet in a solar system-wide project called The Billion Year Archive.
Arch has already been on four space missions, including to the Moon and in the Tesla Roadster glove compartment. Arch has already put DNA on the Moon in synthetic amber. We are adapting and improving this storage technology for this mission. The collection of a bio archive of Earth’s diverse species will be done through the Arch non-profit.

How long will my DNA last on the Moon?
On Earth, scientists have decoded DNA from samples preserved in tree amber that are almost a million years old. We don't yet know for sure how long the DNA will last on the Moon. Factors such as radiation and temperature accelerate degradation in space. We include many copies of your DNA so there is redundancy.
What could my DNA be used for?
We don’t know. LifeShip is a time capsule for the future. Perhaps our future descendants will recover it and get a snapshot of Earth's life. Perhaps another advanced civilization finds it and can learn about or even recreate Earth’s life. The limits are your imagination.
What about contaminating space and Planetary Protection?
We care deeply about protecting space. We hope to learn about the origins of life and expand our knowledge of the Universe. LifeShip stores dried DNA in synthetic amber resin within a sealed capsule. We sterilize the exterior of the capsule and follow standard space protocols. NASA’s Planetary Protection agency has classified the Moon as a Category II planetary body, which means that contamination is very unlikely and there are no added restrictions on the types of payloads that can go to the Moon.
What if the mission fails? What then?
Space is hard. Rockets explode and landers crash. But don’t worry, we’ll get you to the Moon. If not on the first try then we’ll try again and include you for free on our next Moon mission.

How will you be remembered?

"The further and further we look out with our telescopes and the further and further we look in with our microscopes, the larger and larger and smaller and smaller the universe becomes in order to escape the investigation because we are the universe looking at itself.

Alan Watts
